" Something Delicious Beneath the Prickles"

http://www.gourmetsleuth.com/nopalitos.htm viewed on 9/30/08

For this source report I thought I may as well see if I could find yet another article about Nopales cactus. Not only did I find more information about this cactus, I found information on how to clean them. It seems this particular cactus is also called a Prickly Pear cactus. And I found out the thick oval shapes are called paddles. The plant is the genus Opuntia from the Cactaceae family. Nopal means cactus in the Spanish language and Nopales is the term for "cactus stem". The word Nopalitos is the term the pads are called once they are cut up and then prepared for eating. Two food crops come from the prickly pear cactus, the "nopalitos" which I already have mentioned and the prickly "pear" or fruit of the cactus. This type of cactus has been noted to have been grown and eaten in Central Mexico since before the Spanish arrived. Spanish explorers carried the plant to Spain and from Spain it spread to North Africa and then as well to certain parts of the United States. It is also located in the Mediterranean area. To select your cactus: wearing gloves, select pads that are eight inches long or 20 cm., but not any longer. To prepare the pads remove the thorns and the "eyes" with a vegetable peeler or small paring knife. Wash the pads well with cool water and peel with a paring knife or there are special tools you can purchase. Trim off any blemished or discolored areas. Slice the now cleaned pads in strips ( slices), pieces, or you can leave them whole. Most people serve the cactus grilled or boiled. Some people dice the cactus up and put it in bean and rice dishes. There is more information about how the cactus is grown and harvested, but I will save that for my paper. I suggest you visit the website and get all the facts as they have written it. Plus, there are some really good recipes to try and more interesting facts. Mustang Sally

"Cactus - High in Vitamins"

http://veganandgrainfreebrownwife.blogspot.com/2008/04/cactus-nopales-high-invitamins-and.html viewed on 9/30/08

This website was all about people who are vegan vegetarians and how they eat Nopales cactus in most of their food dishes. They have studied this certain type of cactus and have found it to be high in vitamins. Further study of Nopales cactus has shown that it is also good for people to eat that have diabeties. The picture shown in the website of Nopales cactus was the kind of cactus that is kind of thick and oval. You remove the prickers and you can dice it up to use in your food. This is the kind of cactus they use at the diner I am going to do my observations in. Now I understand why it is used in Mexican dishes because it is good for you. I hope to see some of it cleaned. "Reading Response"

" Low Wages Strong Backs"

This story was a great story . It could open the eyes of most people. The journalist uses his own experience as evidence. And he read that story from the 1930's.The journalist uses facts that he obtained from the Legal Services of a New Jersey Poverty Research Institute. The facts are taken on or about single people living in Passaic County.
The journalist/author has taken the approach of placing himself in the same situation as a temp. worker. The journalist only starts out with so much money to his name, no car or bicycle. He is trying to figure out how to maintain what money he has without knowing how much money he will make once he is hired as a temp. worker. The journalist tries to understand how it might feel to be a man from another country, trying to live on as little as he can so he can send most of the money back to his homeland to his family there.
As an outsider the author knows how life is with what he makes at his current job. Perhaps he thinks he would like to make more. But then he gets on the inside and walks in yet another pair of shoes and realizes how hard it is to make ends meet working in this temp. job. I think looking from the outside the journalist might not have realized how tough it was going to be. Yes, I think the writer has appealed to ethics as he truly looks around and tries to see how it would feel to be one of his co - workers. The writer talks about the man from Peru who he befriends and how hard it is for him. As he only knows very little English. The writer mentions how the other workers wonder why he is there being someone who is white and speaks very fluent English. I think the author has a good leg to stand on for credibility because he places his self in the same situation for one month as the other temp. workers. He realizes that it is worse for the people he works with because it is not just a trial period for them, it is there life. Even though he deprives himself and gets real hungry. He endures physical hardships from the hot sun and all the walking to get places that he does so he can really live the part. He still can't feel the way someone from another country must feel.
I think that the target audience are those people who think they have it tough when really they don't. People with lots of money. This story should open there eyes to how good they really do have it. The audience could be the people who are in a lower income bracket to show them that someone does care and worked as they do and now understands. I feel the message or main point in this reading is: There is someone who has it harder than you just around the corner. So think about what you have and be a better keeper of what you have. I think the author thinks the people he worked with are courageous and strong, tough cookies. And I think he wishes they could have it better. He is grateful he could go back to his 30,000 dollar a year job, what he already had. But I don't think he will ever forget his experience or even want to.

"Community Proposal"

The community that I have picked is a restaurant a few miles away from me. It is a small diner that serves very tasty Mexican cuisine. When I went by the diner the other day I noticed the name of the diner had changed. I hope that doesn't mean the owners have changed. I have had dinner with my husband at this diner a couple of times. About seven years ago when I was taking Spanish classes at J.C.C. my instructor suggested that we try the diner out because the workers there were willing to put up with slow speaking Spanish students. After ordering our meal I began to ask the waiter questions. Then another man came from around the corner and began talking too. He was the owner and he shared that he had moved from Guatemala. If I remember correctly he said his wife was in Guatemala when he met her, but she was from Michigan so that is how they ended up in Michigan. All the workers were very happy, lively music was playing all in Spanish. The workers were singing along and laughing having a good time entertaining my husband and I. The smells wafting my way made my stomach growl. The food was delicious, I ordered a bean, rice and chicken dish that had cactus in it. The beverages we had were pop (sodas) from Mexico. They are called Sangria's. There are other flavors too. Part of the diner is the food area, while the other part is a make shift little market. They sell foods and canned goods that Hispanic neighbors like to use. I hope to learn more about this little diner/store community. I plan to ask for permission to observe the diner and I am pretty sure they will let me. My husband and I will eat there for our date night. I hope to learn more about how they prepare and cook the cactus. Several questions I would like to ask are:1.) How many of your dishes do you use the cactus in? 2.) Did you own and operate a restaurant when you lived in Guatemala? 3.) I plan on asking them where in Guatemala did they used to live, how long have they lived here? Do they have any other friends that are involved in the restaurant business? What made them want to start a restaurant and move to the United States? 4.) Do they get more business from the store or the diner part of their business? I want to learn more about their culture, community as I have been to Guatemala. I visited a little poor town and some wonderful Mayan ruins, this will help with my insider view. I wonder if they support family members back home or if they have been able to move them here if that is even a factor. It will give me a chance to try and converse using my ever so rusty Spanish speaking skills. I know one thing it will be good for my husband and I to eat there again, it was such a happy place. "Legislator submits bill on handicapped access problems": Local : Redding Record Search
April 3, 2008
http://www.redding.com/news/2008/apr/o3/legislator-submits-bill-on-handicapped-access/

I needed some good guidelines from a reputable source so that I am more informed about the Americans with Disabilities Act. Since 1990, there are regulations in place that businesses need to follow to be legally handicapped accessible. This story is about a legislator submitting a bill about disability rights. The legislator is trying to help the disabled and citizens who own businesses. This article showed me some of the red tape that can be involved, a lawyers view, and how hard it can be to get a bill passed. In using this website I was led to other websites with more information I can use. I was able to view measurement guidelines and get a good visual of how accessibility should look. I plan to use some of the information from this website for my essay paper.

WE1-9/2/08

Description or Intro

I want to write my first essay about a topic that society is concerned about. I have several topics picked out I just need to decide. As far as the ad that I chose goes, it is a Converse shoe ad. The ad is trying to make Converse shoes look like the best thing you could ever put on your feet. One of the conventions that it uses is a swimming pool with a British football player standing at the end of the diving board, trying to look like he could fly. Or they could be saying that by wearing Converse shoes you will feel like you are walking on air.

Selling methods used to make a case

The ad picture is in mostly black and white, except in the lower left corner it says in bold red letters "GET CHUCKED". I did not know what that meant so I researched a little and found out that the man who started Converse rubber soled shoes name was Chuck Taylor. He made the first pair in 1908 while he was a Hoosier basketball player. There is even a Chuck line of shoes that Converse sells leading to why the caption says what it says. Converse shoes seem to be targeting their sales to babies on up to however old you would like to be and wear this style of shoes.

Location and layout

The location of this ad is at a swimming pool maybe at someones house ( as I mentioned). Most of the ad shows the water in the pool with ripples in the water. The water looks real clear and the pool is quite large. Along side of the pool is a well manicured lawn and the pool is in the ground with a nice cement edge. Even in black and white color it looks refreshing. Besides the pool, the next main focus is on a young hip or popular British looking man standing at the very end of the pools diving board. He is dressed in jeans with suspenders hanging down, a white shirt with a black tie hanging loosely from his neck, looking care free. He has on a dressy short black jacket that is wide open as his arms are spread out as if he would like to fly. His head is tilted to one side to look relaxed and his shirt is raised up showing a small part of his abdomen. The Converse shoes he is wearing are white with black laces and are low cut John Vasvatos line.

Text Conventions and target audience

I already mentioned the red text in the left hand corner and what I believe to be it's meaning. But, in the right hand lower corner is a small text that is shaped like the rounded part of the top of a basketball. It reads Converse in black block style letters. Then there is a small red Converse logo star under the "v" in the word converse. The next line reads a mans name and after looking up info on his name I found out he is yet another artist with his own line of Converse shoes. The target audience appears to be aimed at middle school, high school or any age after that people, and of coarse athletes.

Conclusion

The prices on the many different colors and styles or lines of Converse shoes went from a very reasonable $ 19.99 a pair to a very high price of $327.00 a pair. As far as the ad trying to make it look like you can fly or you will feel like you are walking on air that's probably stretching things a little. After all shoes are shoes. People need to set a price in their budget as to what they think is a good price. I personally know that no matter how good a pair of shoes feel at first they soon will break in or wear out. So what I pay for shoes is a lower price. I do happen to like Converse shoes. I like that they come in the color of red, and looking up this ad I see they come in some wild funky colors also. I think that is enough to sell the line of shoes.
